A climbing couple from Munich has to hold out all night on the rock in the Karwendel mountains.

Rescue by helicopter the next morning.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Spectacular rescue in the Alps: Once again, two mountaineers in Mittenwald (Garmisch-Partenkirchen district) left too late for the Karwendel mountains and also overestimated themselves.

The couple from Munich, a 30-year-old and a 38-year-old, ultimately had to endure more than ten hours on the rope on a steep rock face - until they were finally rescued.

Climbing couple from Munich relies on mobile app

The two only set off from Mittenwald on Sunday at around 9.30 a.m.

By the time they got to the south-west ridge of the Koflerturm, the goal of their tour, they had already made two mistakes.

They relied on a mobile app that indicated the entire route could be done in two and a half hours.

An unrealistic time, says mountain rescue chief Heinz Pfeffer.

"Even outstanding climbers with an enormous condition and a lot of experience can hardly do it in this time."

Mistakes on descent: climbing couple overnight on mountain

And so the climbers only arrived at the summit cross around 9 p.m.

Then the crucial mistake: They abseiled in the wrong place, got stuck 150 meters above the ground in the east face.

Out of necessity, they set up a spartan camp at 10:30 p.m.

Then they got scared and made an emergency call at 12:05 a.m.

At 2:30 a.m. a helicopter made its way up.

A rescuer from the mountain rescue service analyzed the security of the two with headlights.

Since there was no direct danger, the emergency services did not want to take any unnecessary risks.

So the couple spent the night on the rope before they could finally be safely brought down to the valley at 7.15 in the morning.
