The farm shop on Glonner Weg in Unterhaching recently started selling fresh eggs, potatoes, herbs, honey, rapeseed oil, pasta and vegetables – everything directly from the farm or from the region is a priority for farmer Tomi Huber.

Unterhaching

– Tomi Huber shakes a bucket full of Heucobs.

Lotti, Maria, Zenzi, Resi, Franz, Giacomo, Xaver, Hans and Schorsch raise their heads.

The young cattle stroll across the meadow towards their owner.

The 30-year-old farmer strokes the soft fur of the animals that have been living in the paddock on Glonner Weg in Unterhaching for a few weeks - right next to a new development area.

"Normally you have to drive to the Oberland to see cows in the pasture," says Huber.

“It is important to me that people see how the animals live and where their food comes from.

I could have built on the area," says the man from Unterhaching, pointing to his three-hectare plot of land in the middle of town with a sweeping gesture.

"But agriculture is too important to me."

Family business for almost 150 years

Recently, Huber, whose family business has existed since 1879, has been selling regional products in his newly opened self-service farm shop across from the cow pasture – homemade or from friendly farmers.

Next to the green sign with the filigree lettering "Glonnerhof", the 30-year-old has set up a sales stand with herbs.

In the shop, there are local products such as rapeseed oil, honey and egg noodles on several shelves, wooden boxes and a farmer's cupboard.

Huber also offers potatoes that were harvested just a few meters from the shop.

"Currently there are only two varieties, from September we will have more again.

Then it's harvest time," says the trained farmer.

You can also buy eggs in the farm shop.

From the Oar-Stadl in Großhelfendorf, from the Zehmerhof in Pliening and now also directly from the Glonnerhof.

“Our 300 pullets are finally laying eggs.

They may still be small, but the number is growing every day.” The chickens are allowed to explore the 2000 square meter run behind the farm shop for several hours a day.

They only spend the night in their stable to protect themselves from martens, cats and hawks.

The range is constantly being expanded

"I want to keep expanding the store's product range," says Huber.

Later, the meat from the home-bred cattle that Huber keeps together with his friend Martin Schmidt and dairy products will also be added.

“Regionality is important to me.

I can still imagine offering apples from Lake Constance, but nothing more.”

Huber already expected that the farm shop would be well received by the people of Unterhaching.

“We have been offering potato boxes for four years.

Since the pandemic, the demand has increased enormously.

People want to know more about what they are eating and where it is grown.” Around 400 citizens celebrated with the farmer and his family when the shop opened.

"The feedback was consistently positive." In a small book that Huber has placed in the store to write down the products he has bought, one of the around 40 customers who come every day leaves a small positive note.

"There are messages from young couples, families and seniors - everyone is welcome here."

There are still five farmers in the area

Tomi Huber's family is one of five who still farm their fields in Unterhaching.

"There used to be twice as many farmers here," recalls the 30-year-old's father, Hubert Huber.

It was not clear from the start that his son would one day continue the business.

“When I was 18, I went through a discovery phase.

But I was sure pretty quickly that I wanted to be a farmer too, so I started my apprenticeship.”

Huber's plans for the future are big.

In addition to a café that will be adjacent to the shop, he also wants to give kindergartens, schools and institutions the opportunity to visit the farm in Unterhaching.

"So the kids can see that a cow isn't purple."

The Glonnerhof

at Glonner Weg 2 in Unterhaching is open Monday to Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The shop is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
