Daraa-Sana
Abundant production, great economic rent for farmers, and low costs of cultivation and production compared to other types of fruit trees are the most important reasons that prompted farmers in Daraa to cultivate pomegranate on a large scale.
According to the head of the Department of Plant Production in the Directorate of Agriculture, Eng. Wael Al-Ahmad, pomegranate cultivation is concentrated in most areas of the governorate, especially the western and northern regions. Production in this season is estimated at 15250 tons.
Al-Ahmad said in a statement to SANA reporter that the area planted with pomegranate in Daraa is 1,021 hectares, comprising 445,000 trees, all of which are in the process of bearing fruit.
Daraa farmers have turned to pomegranate cultivation in the past ten years at the expense of the vine, as it is a successful cultivation, and the crop is characterized by high productivity and remunerative marketing prices compared to other types of fruit trees.
A number of farmers confirmed that the pomegranate tree begins production two years after its cultivation, and during this period the land can be used to grow vegetables and other crops, pointing out the importance of allocating sufficient quantities of fuels and fertilizers, which will reflect positively on production.
The farmer Saeed Suleiman from the town of Ibtaa called for finding markets to sell the production at the peak or to adopt marketing through the Syrian branch of trade similar to the grapes, apples and citrus crops, stressing that the pomegranate crop differs from others in terms of its ability to be stored for a period exceeding 6 months in addition to its nutritional and medicinal value as can be Manufacture of its products such as juice and molasses.
Izraa Center for Fruit Planting Production of the Directorate of Agriculture produces pomegranate seedlings with high reliability and low prices.
