The river of 7 colors: Colombia's commitment to tourism 0:41
(CNN Spanish) --
Google joins the festivities in Colombia and creates a Doodle to commemorate Independence Day on July 20.
This year marks the 212th anniversary of the Independence of Colombia, the day on which a series of events are commemorated that would give rise to the Independence of Nueva Granda —as the set of provinces that today make up what is now Colombia was called— from the power from Spain.
Why is Colombia's Independence celebrated on July 20?
This is what happened in 1810
"It is the first time that we think of ourselves as a possible country. It is the first time that we think of ourselves politically, that we have an idea about ourselves," says Colombian historian Diana Uribe in a podcast about the July 20 celebration.
The Google Doodle boasts the colors of the Colombian flag and features an Andean bear, also known as a spectacled bear.
But why is a bear the centerpiece of the Doodle?
Because, this particular species is said to be the guardian of the country.
"Colombians see the animal as a sacred addition to their land and include it in their oral traditions of legends, myths and songs," Google said on its website.

Google took the opportunity to talk about the importance of the spectacled bear, a species that, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), is in danger of extinction.
