Kretschmer wants "freezing" of the Ukraine war - and warns the world of chaos

Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) deviates from the party line when it comes to the Ukraine war.

He calls for the war to be “frozen” and for Germany to play the role of mediator.

Dresden - Russia must not win the war against Ukraine - that is the consensus of the traffic light coalition and also of the Union as the largest opposition party.

Despite the high costs for Germany, such as the gas crisis, skyrocketing food prices and high inflation.

However, Saxony's Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer obviously has a different opinion than his party: He assesses the Ukraine war as too great an economic threat for Germany and Europe.

One must recognize that the war is throwing the entire world and Europe into chaos, he said on Tuesday (July 19).

If it continues like this, there is a risk of losing the economic strength that is necessary to organize security and remain competitive.

Ukraine News: Kretschmer wants to see Germany as a mediator

The conflict that led to the escalation of the Ukraine war must be resolved, Kretschmer demanded.

According to him, Germany must play a mediating role.

This is due to the size and history of the Federal Republic.

One was very involved in the European association, but had to play a central role in resolving the conflict together with France, the USA and other countries, said the Union politician.

Kretschmer literally: "We have to work to ensure that this war is frozen." However, that does not mean that Ukraine should give up territories, said Kretschmer.

Russia's war is still an injustice and a crime.

According to Kretschmer, however, Germany and Europe should clarify their position on this war.

He currently understands the statements that firstly it is about winning the war and secondly never again buying raw materials from Russia.

The CDU politician believes that if that is the attitude, there will be no ceasefire negotiations.

“I firmly believe that we need these supplies of raw materials.

Secondly, I am of the opinion that we must try together (...) to have an effect on the Russian President and also to convince Ukraine that we all have to freeze this conflict together.

That's something different than what's currently going on."
