Less lighting and no hot water in summer - energy saving should start immediately in the country's buildings.

The municipalities are also involved.

"It won't go without an outcry," the Landau mayor expects.

Mainz - Rhineland-Palatinate wants to reduce gas consumption in the state by 15 percent.

The state government presented an emergency program with austerity measures for state administration and municipalities on Wednesday.

This corresponds to the EU's emergency plan presented on Wednesday, said Prime Minister Malu Dreyer (SPD) after a top-level discussion on energy security with trade unions, business and welfare associations.

However, the appeal to save gas was directed at everyone.

In the current uncertain situation, the motto is "hope for the best and prepare for the worst," said the head of government.

She advocated targeted support for low-income households.

This is now being discussed at the federal level.

Following a conversation between the state government and the President of the Federal Network Agency, Klaus Müller, Dreyer said that nobody should be afraid that gas in private households would be switched off.

"We are facing a tough autumn and winter," said Climate Protection and Energy Minister Katrin Eder (Greens).

In order to achieve the savings target, the hot water in the properties of the state administration is turned off in the summer months, as is the heating.

In the remaining months, automatic shutdowns should be activated.

When cooling in summer, the room temperature is increased from 22 to 26 degrees.

Indoor and outdoor lighting should be switched off if possible.

"We will do that immediately," said Eder and announced a guide from the Energy Agency for energy saving.

"It will not go without an outcry," said Mayor Thomas Hirsch (CDU) of Landau for the working group of municipal umbrella organizations on the savings target of 15 percent.

"This is not a trivial undertaking." Social interaction is of great importance for this.

For example, there will also be safety concerns if public lighting is restricted.

"We have to discuss how we can do that."

Economics Minister Daniela Schmitt (FDP) drew attention to securing the business and industrial location of Rhineland-Palatinate, which is very energy- and raw material-intensive.

"It is important that we closely accompany the economy through this challenging time." Negative effects must be cushioned.

"Should a gas shortage occur, we must adapt and expand the federal government's instruments."

This week, the CDU warned in a position paper on energy policy: "All parts of society are now called upon to save energy and, above all, gas." The parliamentary group is calling for households to be relieved by a temporary price cap for electricity or gas.

A legal basis for changing energy sources, the so-called “fuel switch”, is required for companies.

The Greens also presented a position paper on energy supply.

It calls for a further relief package from the federal government that specifically relieves households with low incomes.

"The principle of solidarity applies," said Co-President Natalie Cramme-Hill.

"Strong shoulders have to carry more load." dpa
