Alexander Görlach believes that China wants to conquer Taiwan - and in doing so is not only threatening the democratically governed island state, but the whole world.

Munich – Since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict, the world has looked anxiously not only at Eastern Europe: the view has widened, and China has also come under the spotlight of politicians and the world public.

Because while most democratic states have put relations with Vladimir Putin's Russia on hold, Beijing is sticking by the Kremlin and speaking of a "rock-solid" friendship between the two countries.

For Alexander Görlach, who at the New York Carnegie Council for Ethics in International Affairs deals with China's striving for power, among other things, this closeness is not surprising: "Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping both want to change the established world order," he says in an interview with

.

"How they think and how they behave is diametrically opposed to what our world is made of today." (Read the entire interview here.)

Putin is currently "brutally implementing his plans to overthrow the existing world order" in Ukraine, according to Görlach.

The threats by China's head of state and party leader Xi Jinping against Taiwan have the same goal: China regards the democratically governed island state as a "renegade province" and is threatening military conquest.

According to Görlach, the Chinese government is closely monitoring Russia's actions against Ukraine.

“The Russians underestimated the resilience of the Ukrainian population.

Beijing is now seeing what happens when the people of a country that has been attacked don't stand by the side of the road and sing 'Hosanna'.” Nevertheless, Görlach has no doubts about Xi's determination to invade Taiwan.

China: President Xi Jinping follows “the rule book of every dictatorship”

The expert also believes: "China's ambitions go beyond Taiwan." You can see that in the South China Sea, for example.

There, China occupies several islands that, according to an international arbitration, belong to the Philippines.

In his current book "Red Alert: How China's aggressive foreign policy in the Pacific is leading to a global war", Görlach also mentions other areas of conflict, such as territorial disputes with Japan and South Korea.

Xi Jinping also follows “the rule book of every dictatorship: you need external enemies against whom you hold the inside together”.

In addition, the United States has repeatedly expressed its support for Taiwan in recent months: In the event of a Chinese invasion, according to US President Biden, the government does not want to support the government with arms deliveries, as has been the case up to now, but instead take direct military action.

However, it is unclear how seriously Biden is taking this threat to Beijing.

German China policy: "One is not in a position to change an image of China that one has cultivated for decades"

Because Xi Jinping has intensified threats against Taiwan in recent years, he is now in a situation from which there is no turning back.

Xi must act - "but how he resolves these entanglements in which he has brought himself has not yet been decided".

China's president, who as chairman of the Central Military Commission is also the supreme commander of the People's Liberation Army, has other options than an attack on Taiwan.

According to Görlach, Xi could "annex some of the smaller islands that belong to Taiwan but are very close to the Chinese coast and declare that as a rejection of the 'American imperialist class enemy' – that is, a victory".

The USA had long recognized the threats to world peace in the western Pacific.

The German federal government, on the other hand, was "just as free of ambition, imagination and creativity under Olaf Scholz as under the aegis of Angela Merkel".

Görlach: “One is not in a position to change an image of China that has been cultivated for decades.

It was the same with Russia.”
