The canoe tour of a German family on the Veluwemeer in the Netherlands has come to a fatal end: the mother of the family died in the accident, the father and one of two daughters are missing and probably drowned, according to the police in Biddinghuizen.

According to the information, the mother and a seven-year-old daughter were initially saved.

According to the police, rescue workers had tried in vain to revive the woman.

Around 3 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, the police were alerted because a child was in the water.

The Coast Guard then began searching.

She finally discovered the little girl on a buoy, and her mother was found in the water.

Cause of accident unclear

The family of four was out and about in a canoe on the water around 75 kilometers northeast of Amsterdam.

The radio station Omroep Flevoland reports that it is not yet known why the canoe capsized.

Later the empty canoe was found by a small island.

In addition to rescue services on the water, helicopters and sniffer dogs were also used.

The police did not provide any information about the identity of the victims or the origin of the family.
