33 people killed in shooting at a popular resort near the northern city of Dohuk • Hundreds demonstrated angrily in front of Turkish embassy in Baghdad

A deadly attack on a tourist site in northern Iraq threatens to escalate relations between Baghdad and Ankara: At least eight people were killed, including two children and 33 wounded, in an attack attributed yesterday to the Turkish army in the province.

Iraqi television reported a shelling that hit a resort in the town of Zahu that was bordered by the Iraqi Kurdistan region and southeastern Turkey.

According to the Iraqi news agency, all the dead are tourists.

A medical source in the town said the dead included two children, three men and three women.

Iraq declared a day of mourning following the deaths of the victims in the attack.

A sniper UAV attack was later reported on a Turkish army position in northern Iraq, no casualties were reported in the attack.

Fury in Iraq: Turkish flag set on fire in the heart of Baghdad

Iraqi officials were quick to point the blame for the attack on Turkey.

According to Zahou Mayor Mashir Bashir, some of the victims are Arab tourists from southern Iraq who came to the place to find refuge from the hot summer weather in their area of residence.

In the song he blamed the Turkish forces across the border and claimed that Turkey attacked the town twice yesterday.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Kajimi has stated that this is an attack on Iraq's sovereignty.

Following this, the National Security Council of Ministers, headed by Kazimi, instructed the Foreign Ministry to summon the Turkish Ambassador to Iraq for a reprimand.

The council also decided to summon Iraq's relations chief in Turkey from Ankara for consultation - and to halt the process of sending the new ambassador to Turkey.

Following this, Iraq demanded that Turkey formally apologize and withdraw its military forces from all Iraqi lands.

The Council of Ministers also instructed the Foreign Ministry to prepare a file documenting all "Turkish attacks on Iraqi sovereignty and the security of Iraqis", and to lodge complaints with the UN International Security Council.

As mentioned, the Turkish Foreign Ministry has denied that the Turkish army is involved in the attack.

The Foreign Ministry said they expressed their regret over the incident, but those behind it were generally terrorists.

The ministry said in a statement that "Turkey opposes any attack on civilians and is fighting terrorism in accordance with international law, taking into account the lives of civilians."

The statement added that "Turkey is ready to take all steps to find out the truth."

Last April, Turkey launched a military operation in northern Iraq against fighters from the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) militia.

The Turkish Air Force then attacked targets in northern Iraq.

This is a continuation of a broader operation by Erdogan against the Kurds along the Turkish border in Iraq and Syria for years.

Erdogan's main concern is the establishment of a 'Kurdish corridor' in Iraq and Syria, which will provoke the Kurdish minority in Turkey to demand national rights and autonomy.

Since the 1980s, the PKK has launched three uprisings in which tens of thousands of people have been killed.

It should be noted that the party is defined as a terrorist organization in Turkey, the United States and other countries.
