Who is Maribel Domínguez, the icon of women's soccer in Mexico

Maribel Domínguez, also popularly known as "Marigol", was suspended as technical director of the Mexican Women's National Team Sub-20 due to an investigation request, the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) reported on March 21. July.

"To support this process and guarantee its impartiality, the coaching staff of this team has been temporarily suspended, with DT Ana Galindo assuming responsibility," the FMF said in a press release.

A native of Chalco, State of Mexico, "Marigol" is the top scorer for the Mexico Women's National Team, and, until recently, the strategist behind the U-20 women's national team.

The former soccer player started playing when she was little, and according to the FMF, her talent surprised the neighborhood children who invited her to play thinking she was a boy.

After playing in San Francisco Tlaltenco, in Tlahuac, she was selected to play in the National Soccer Olympiad where she excelled as a scorer and her secret also came to light. 

“My photo appeared in the newspaper and the lady in the store asked my mother: 'Is your daughter or son... is it a boy?', and my mother said '

yes, it is a boy

,' but the lady told her is that this photo appeared in the newspaper and that was when my mother had to clarify everything and say that she was a girl, "Dominguez told the FMF.

After the absence of a women's league in Mexico, "Marigol" played in 2002 for the Kansas City Mystics, in the US, where she scored 17 goals in her first year, being awarded as the best scorer and MVP of the League.

She later joined the Atlanta Beat, a team with which she was runner-up in 2003.

Later, Domínguez joined the Barcelona women's team in 2005. FIFA came to consider Domínguez the sixth best player in the world.

"Marigol" played in the World Cups in the United States 1999 and Germany 2011, the Olympic Games in Athens 2004, the Gold Cup in 2000, 2002 and 2006, on these last two occasions he won bronze medals.

The former Mexican soccer player also played in the Guadalajara 2011 and Veracruz 2014 Pan American Games, as well as in the 2012 Vancouver Pre-Olympic Championship and the 2014 United States.

In 2017, Domínguez joined the technical direction of the U-15 Women's National Team of Mexico and later took command of the U-17 representative team.

As director of the U-20, the former soccer player managed to place the Mexican team in the World Cup that will be played in Costa Rica from August 10 to 28.

In 2020, Domínguez was inducted into the International Soccer Hall of Fame and in 2022 she was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Pachuca, Hidalgo.
