Tiefenried - The neo-pop artist Mauro Bergonzoli and his partner and muse Franziska Countess Fugger von Babenhausen are not only illustrious contemporaries, but also provide colorful stories - also in the Lower Allgäu.

The anniversary edition of Playboy was recently published, and Bergonzoli designed the cover with 50 "Magic Bunnies" ("magic rabbits") for its 50th anniversary.

The weekly KURIER visited him in the Country Atelier in Tiefenried.

Anyone who enters the studio of the internationally renowned neo-pop artist in Tiefenried will see works that have already hung on the walls of well-known art galleries around the world.

Again and again a "magic eye" (magic eye) looks at you from somewhere - the well-known trademark of the artist.

Works that once hung in Venice or in the Schaezlerpalais Museum in Augsburg, such as Bergonzoli's well-known water lily painting, can be viewed up close in the "magic" country studio in Tiefenried.

As soon as you enter the property, you can immediately see where the artist gets his inspiration from.

Among other things.

Magnificent blossoms, perennials and water lilies adorn the garden with bright splashes of colour, here and there a corner with cultivated vegetables and idyllic seating areas that invite you to linger.

All that's missing is a couple of bunnies hopping through the enchanted garden.

But one family member would probably not allow this: Flash – the family dog, who, like all animals in the Bergonzoli household, came from an animal protection campaign.

Let's stay with the long ears anyway, because they played a central role in the cover design for the 50th anniversary of the men's magazine Playboy.

lightness and joie de vivre

Bergonzoli has long had a soft spot for rabbits.

During his time in Argentina he observed Master Lampe and his contemporaries extensively and admired them for their lifestyle.

"Always productive, energetic and full of life, the Magic Bunny will eat, hop around and make love all day long.

For me it is also a symbol of magic and humour," reveals the artist in an interview with our editors.

The fact that Bergonzoli chose the Magic Bunny as a role model shows not only his joie de vivre, but also his five jolly daughters.

Speaking of reproduction: In the spring, the Maestro, who comes from Italy, will be “Nonno” (Italian for grandpa) for the first time and is really looking forward to it.

Muse and manager Franziska reveals that Mauro also went through dark times in his life and paints his world the way he would like it to be.

This can also be seen on many other works of art by the 56-year-old.

Most of the time he uses strong colors, paints scenes from real life and manages to draw his viewers' glances to the bizarre and subtle.

Bergonzoli, for example, also included the advance of digital currencies on the Playboy cover: Among the coins between the 50 bunnies are also bitcoin coins, which in reality do not exist.

Nevertheless, Bitcoin, together with other digital currencies and the invention of the blockchain, on which numerous digital currencies are based, have revolutionized the financial world.

Another special feature that only particularly attentive contemporaries will notice at first glance: The colors of the Playboy cover are exclusively those of the German flag.

Of all the Playboy magazines worldwide, this sold best on the German market, as Playboy itself reported in its 50th anniversary edition.

The contact to Playboy came about through the publisher Hubert Burda, who is a self-confessed Bergonzoli collector.

At an art evening, Burda introduced Bergonzoli to the editor-in-chief of Playboy, Florian Boitin.

The two hit it off right away and agreed to do a cool project together someday.

The Playboy anniversary was the perfect occasion for this.

Even after completing the cover, the maestro is working at full speed.

He is currently preparing his upcoming large exhibition in his new gallery EVEY in the USA (Palm Beach, Florida) and is working on a picture for the 135th anniversary of the Meggle company as well as on other commissioned works.

Live and work where others vacation

But the family would not have gone on summer vacation anyway, admits Franziska Countess Fugger von Babenhausen: “The garden here is at its loveliest at this time.

We would miss all of that if we weren't there.” The two daughters Blue (13) and Victoria (6), for whom the garden is a play Eldorado, also see it that way.

Anyone interested in buying Bergonzoli's art is welcome to register for a visit to the Country Atelier.

There are always exclusive art and culture events that take place there by invitation.
