A Germany-wide ranking of small towns looked for the most livable locations.

The result is clear: Bavaria is ahead.

Munich – The magazine "Kommunal" examined the most livable small towns in Germany on the basis of numerous different data and compiled a comprehensive ranking.

The result is more than clear: 23 of the 30 most livable small towns are in Bavaria, and in places one to 20 there are only four small towns outside of Bavaria.

Small town ranking: Munich is a hotspot

Above all, the area around Munich is a hotspot: more than half of the small towns in the ranking published on kommunal.de are in the immediate vicinity of the state capital.

This is also the case for places one to three: Grünwald is at the top, which was able to score particularly well with its natural surroundings and simultaneous proximity to Munich, the Bavaria film studios and the increasing number of inhabitants.

Grünwald is one of the richest communities in Germany and is home to numerous celebrities, from star players from FC Bayern Munich to pop star Patrick Lindner and presenter Kai Pflaume.

Unterfoehring, known as one of the most important media locations in Germany, follows in second place.

Bayerischer Rundfunk, the Pro Sieben/Sat 1 Mediengruppe and Sky as well as Europe's largest satellite provider Astra Deutschland are based here.

Finally, in third place is Garching, a rather atypical small town for Bavaria, which gained notoriety in the post-war period, primarily due to the settlement of numerous Sudeten Germans.

The most livable small towns in Germany: only one in the east

According to

kommunal.de

, all small towns in Germany with 10,000 to 20,000 inhabitants were examined using 67 different statistical data.

According to BR, it was about “development of the number of inhabitants, unemployment figures, disposable income, but also the number of single-family houses and semi-detached houses”.

The result was 30 small towns, 23 of which are in Bavaria.

After Grünwald, Unterföhring and Garching came the first non-Bavarian town: Walldorf in north-west Baden-Württemberg.

For fifth and sixth place, it's back to near the Bavarian state capital: Gräfelfing and Ismaning.

Seventh place is the only small town in eastern Germany: Schönefeld near Berlin.

Franconia's number 1: Mayor torn

The fact that a small Franconian town, Marktheidenfeld, made it into the ranking triggers mixed feelings among the local mayor.

On the one hand, of course, proud, but in a statement from the city, from which the BR quotes, he also says: "As a convinced Franconian, I cannot quite understand that we are the only small town in Franconia."
