VfL Osnabrück won the season opening game of the 3rd football league.
With a spectacular long-range shot by Sven Köhler in the 83rd minute, the promotion candidate defeated MSV Duisburg 1-0 (0-0) on Friday evening.
The success was deserved because the clearly superior Osnabrück team had already created several good chances in front of 14,256 fans at the Bremen Bridge.
Osnabrück – Robert Tesche, who was signed by Bundesliga club VfL Bochum, missed the best of them in the 59th minute.
The 35-year-old hit the post from close range.
An overhead kick goal from Ba-Muaka Simakala was disallowed for offside (17').
Duisburg's best player was their new goalkeeper Vincent Müller, who came from Dutch Cup winners PSV Eindhoven in the summer.
