U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi's planned visit to Taiwan in August has been rumored recently.
Pelosi responded on July 21.
"I don't discuss my travel plans, it's a safety issue," she said at a regular press conference, stressing that she never explained any travel itinerary in advance.
When asked how the United States should deter China from attacking Taiwan with force, Pelosi responded that this is a very important question.
"I think it's important that we show support for Taiwan. I also don't think any of us have ever said on the Taiwan issue that we support independence, it's up to Taiwan to decide," Pelosi said.
Since U.S. President Joe Biden said in response to Pelosi's visit to Taiwan on the evening of July 20 that the Pentagon opposed the plan, "the military believes that it is an unwise move to visit Taiwan now."
Pelosi said she had heard the rumors, but Biden hadn't spoken to her "directly" and she wasn't sure.
"I think the president is saying that the U.S. military might be concerned that our planes are going to be shot down, or something like that."
