Ramallah is stormy: the "appointment scandal" in the Palestinian government Israel today

2022-07-23T06:53:44.507Z

At the center of the affair: the appointment of the daughters of two Palestinian ministers to positions in the public sector • The appointments caused a public uproar • The Palestinian Prime Minister became the target of an attack and had to stop the proceedings

Following the public pressure: Palestinian Prime Minister Muhammad Ashtea was forced to cancel appointments to senior positions in his government.

The intervention of her wives and his announcement of the halting of the proceedings came due to a storm that broke out against the background of the appointment of two women in two government offices.

The two are the daughters of two ministers, the Minister of Labor, Muhammad Ziara, and the Minister of Local Government Affairs, Majdi Saleh.

According to publications, the two ministers made a "deal", according to which each of them would appoint the other's daughter to a senior position in his office.

This argument about a "possible job exchange deal" was denied by the ministers and officials around them, but at the same time they rushed to claim in their defense that the girls have professional skills and experience that equip them for the positions in question.

The scandal once again raised the question of corruption in the public sector and in the institutions of the Palestinian Authority to the Palestinian public agenda.

The main argument is that those who are connected and close to senior officials in the Authority can win coveted jobs and appointments.

It is claimed on social media that ministers take care of their relatives and integrate them into positions in the public sector and the diplomatic service, while others, ordinary residents, have no chance of getting similar jobs.

Due to the storm raging online, the Authority for the Fight against Palestinian Corruption began procedures to review the two controversial appointments.

His wife ordered a halt to the procedures for the appointment of the daughters of the two ministers and published a public announcement to calm the public pressure that had arisen.

"Any appointment that is not subject to the regulations used in government ministries and that does not meet the criteria of transparency is illegal and should be stopped. An examination procedure will be conducted for the appointments that have been made, and those that were made in violation of the provisions of the law, will be canceled," Eshatiye said.

However, even after the Palestinian Prime Minister announced that he would act to cancel the appointments, many in the Palestinian public were not satisfied with that and demanded the dismissal of the two ministers, Saleh and Ziara.

This comes in the background of growing criticism against the functioning of the government of Mohammed Ashtea and demands to replace him with another prime minister.

Following the media attack, Asil Saleh, the daughter of the Minister of Local Government Affairs, published a post on Facebook in which she said, "I announce that I have not been appointed to any government position. I respect transparency and justice for all people and do not agree to injustice or loss of opportunities for anyone, and do not see myself as exceptional from others in any appointment ".
