»The Atlas of the Devil« provides an answer.
Documentary filmmaker and card collector Edward Brooke-Hitching has spent years rummaging through the visual memory of various cultures and compiling images that vividly stage their fantasies of the afterlife.
Not all share Christianity's simple scheme of reward in heaven and punishment in hell.
The underworld doesn't have to be a cruel place, at least not forever.
Often enough, however, fire reigns supreme, demons shriek and the tormented groan in the depictions of the worlds one enters after death.
Then the prince of darkness eats a leg or excretes a whole sinner undigested.
Grotesque monsters always stand a good chance of becoming members of the devil's court, as do fallen angels.
The underworld is certainly not indescribable.
Their depictions even provide information about the reality of the people who created them.
Anyone who looks at these pictures understands why their artists preferred not to go to hell.
