The Directorate of Agriculture in Lattakia, in cooperation with the extension unit in the town of Mashqita, carried out a field day to introduce the olive shield disease “olive rot” and ways to prevent it.
The head of the Prevention Department in the Directorate, Engineer Yasser Muhammad, indicated that through the tours of technicians in the department on olive groves in the countryside of Lattakia, it was noticed that the spread of the olive fruit rot disease began, and the infection is concentrated on the “Darmli” variety more than others as a result of the large size of the fruits and its early infection with the olive fruit fly.
Muhammad pointed out that the disease is inferred by the formation of circular brown spots with a diameter of up to one centimeter, in addition to the appearance of black spots at times.
Muhammad pointed out that olive flies have five larval ages, and therefore attractive traps should be suspended at an average of five traps per acre of land, partial spraying with toxic baits and copper compounds, and plowing the soil after harvesting and collecting fallen fruits for mitigation.
In turn, the head of the Agricultural Association in Lattakia, Louay Salloum, indicated that in coordination with the Directorate of Agriculture and the extension units, seminars and field days are held periodically because of their role in informing farmers of the appropriate times to combat insects and the use of appropriate pesticides and give them instructions to maintain agricultural seasons.
The head of the extension unit in Mashqita Rimas Joni explained that this insect has severe damage to the leaves and fruits, especially olive oil, and therefore it must be combated with the attracting liquid, which is distributed in the extension units for free with instructions on how to use it and hang it with traps to reduce damage.
