At least three dead after a shooting at a university in the Philippines

At least three people were killed and two others were injured during a shooting at a university in Manila, the capital of the Philippines, Philippine police said Sunday.

A former mayor of a city is one of the fatalities, according to police.

The

suspect was armed with two handguns and was captured

in a car he commandeered trying to escape from the Ateneo de Manila University in suburban Quezon City, according to authorities.

He was blocked by witnesses and authorities at the gates of the university.

The sprawling university was shut down and the commencement rite at the campus law school was cancelled.

The president of the Supreme Court, Alexander Gesmundo, who was to participate as a speaker at the ceremony, received notice that he had to turn around on the way to the act, according to the authorities.

Newly elected President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. promised that the attack would be promptly investigated and the perpetrator brought to justice.

He is scheduled to address a joint session of Congress in the House of Representatives on Monday, also in Quezon City, where police and other law enforcement had imposed a weapons ban and tightened security before the shooting.

"We are shocked and saddened by the events that occurred today at the Ateneo graduation," said Marcos Jr.

"We mourn the bereaved, the injured, and those whose scars from this experience will be deep,"

he added.

Among those killed in the attack are Rosita Furigay, former mayor of the city of Lamitan, in Basilan province, in the south of the country, her assistant and a university guard.

Furigay's daughter, who was due to attend the graduation, was injured and taken to a hospital, according to a police report.

Investigators were trying to determine a motive for the attack, but Quezon City Police Chief Brigadier General Remus Medina said the suspect, believed to be a doctor, had a longstanding dispute with Furigay.
