The Italian coast guard announced today the recovery of the bodies of five migrants and the rescue of about 700 others off the southern coast of the country.
Reuters quoted the coast guard as saying in a statement that it had carried out, in cooperation with a commercial ship and with the support of the police, rescue operations for migrants off the coast of Calabria in the south of the country.
This operation comes at a time when the flow of migrants across the Mediterranean is increasing in a period of less sea turmoil.
Data from the Italian Interior Ministry showed that more than 34,000 migrants have arrived in Italy since the beginning of this year, up from 25,500 in the same period last year.
The Ocean Viking also spotted today a rubber boat packed with migrants in international waters off the Libyan coast and rescued 87 people.
The Sea Watch ship of a German organization rescued more than 400 migrants yesterday, including several children and two women, as the group sailed in four overcrowded boats.
