An Indian politician drank a glass of water straight from a holy river.

He wanted to show how clean the water is - but a little later he ended up in the hospital.

Sultanpur Lodhi - Indian politician Bhagwant Mann wanted to prove how clean India's Kali Bein river is.

So he drank a glass of river water in front of the cameras.

But two days later he was hospitalized with severe abdominal pain,

That's why the prime minister of the Indian state of Punjab drank river water

The Kali Bein River is considered sacred in India.

In the course of the "Green Revolution" agricultural productivity increased in India and the water bodies became more and more polluted.

An initiative under Balbir Singh Seechewal therefore organized a river cleanup of the sacred Kali Leg, which flows through the Indian state of Punjab.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann traveled to the city of Sultanpur Lodhi on Sunday to mark the 22nd anniversary of the cleanup.

To prove how clean the river is today, the politician dipped a glass into the murky water and gulped it down in front of the cameras.

Just two days later, however, the Indian politician ended up in the hospital.

His illness is said to be directly related to the high-profile drinking of the river water, according to internal sources such as

Indian Express

.

Before his political career, Bhagwant Mann worked as a comedian and spoke in his program mainly about business, sports and politics.

His appearance this week involuntarily resembled a political skit.

The corresponding video went viral – almost ten million people have seen it so far.

Indian politician hospitalized after drinking river water

It was said that Bhagwant Mann fell ill on Tuesday evening and was suffering from severe abdominal pain.

From his office in the metropolis of Chandigarh in Punjab, the politician was apparently taken by plane to a hospital in Delhi.

The government is said to have tried to keep his illness a top secret as he was flown to the Punjab state capital without all his security personnel.

The politician's office initially did not confirm the minister's hospitalization.

However, an official said

Mann was alive and well and had a packed day of back-to-back sessions on Thursday, according to

Indian Express .

There are several sacred rivers in India, including the Ganges.

Pollution of watercourses is a problem.

In addition to pollution from agriculture, wastewater from cities and industry also plays a role.

According to environmental protection experts, around 80 percent of the pollution in the holy Yamuna River occurs in the two percent of the stretch that the river flows through the city of Delhi.
