Outsider Lorenzo Musetti slowed down young star Carlos Alcaraz and surprisingly won the tennis tournament at Hamburg's Rothenbaum.
In the final of the European Open, which could hardly be surpassed in terms of tension, the 20-year-old Italian prevailed on Sunday after a hard fight 6: 4, 6: 7 (6: 8), 6: 4 against the top favorite from Spain and caught up his Hamburg premiere at the same time his first ATP title.
Hamburg – Alcaraz, one year younger in the world rankings, who also played in the Hanseatic city for the first time, missed the sixth coup he was aiming for on the ATP tour in front of 7,500 spectators in summer temperatures.
The day before, outsider Bernarda Pera from the USA had celebrated the women's victory.
In the final, the 27-year-old defeated the top seeded Anett Kontaveit from Estonia 6:2, 6:4 and, after Budapest, won her second tournament within a week.
As the best German, Andrea Petkovic from Darmstadt failed in the quarter-finals because of Kontaveit.
