The Greek authorities announced that a huge fire broke out in a tourist resort on the Greek island of Medele Plesvos, causing massive evacuations in the area and destroying buildings.
The mayor of the western part of the Greek island was quoted by the local daily Kathimerini as saying, "The fire broke out in a mountainous forest and reached the suburbs and destroyed a large number of homes and businesses near Vatera, a famous 5-mile stretch of beach on the island of the Aegean Sea."
The mayor indicated that the firefighters are waging a huge battle to save more homes from the fire, pointing out that the winds have changed the direction of the fire and it has become uncontrollable.
In a related context, the fire department indicated that the fire was burning on two fronts, one heading towards the village of Frisa and the other heading towards Vatira, pointing out that about 100 firefighters, 19 vehicles and 7 helicopters participated in the ground and air operations to control the fire.
In the Evrosa region, for the third day, another fire broke out in the Dadia National Park, destroying more than 800 hectares of dense pine forest.
The devastating fires burned more than 2,750 hectares on Mount Pendele on the outskirts of the capital Athens last week, with more than a dozen homes destroyed and thousands of people fleeing the area.
