There is a drought in Bavaria.

Not only in the fields – but also in the hospital.

There's no blood here.

The BRK is now asking everyone for help.

Munich

– The blood donation service of the Bavarian Red Cross is currently in a hurry.

"Every donation that comes in with us goes through the manufacturing process for various preparations and is delivered again immediately," reports spokesman Patric Nohe.

"At the moment we only have a range of about three days." That means: If no more new blood donations are made from today, the hospitals in Bavaria could still be supplied with blood products for three days.

Then it would be over with the treatment of the chronically ill, with life-saving operations on the heart or stomach, with the treatment of seriously injured people after an accident.

And also over with the many postponed surgeries that are currently being made up for in the hospitals after a long wait.

Exactly these are one of the reasons why the reserves for blood donations have shrunk so much.

"We currently have an extremely high need for blood donations," explains Nohe.

In Bavaria, the basic requirement is already quite high, it is 2000 canned goods a day.

But now the catch-up operations are added.

And on top of that: "A high hunger for leisure time," explains Nohe.

The willingness to donate blood traditionally decreases somewhat in the summer;

but this summer people seem particularly happy to spend at the lake, in the beer garden or at an open-air concert - and not at the cannula of the BRK.

"We know that people sacrifice their precious free time to donate blood," emphasizes Nohe.

"And that's great.

But it should be possible to do both.

Enjoy your free time – and donate blood.”

Another issue is the high temperatures.

"We're definitely struggling with the heat," says Nohe.

"Beyond the 30 degrees it gets incredibly thin." The employees of the BRK make sure that the volunteers feel good even on a hot day after the blood donation, he emphasizes.

Donors should drink plenty of fluids and eat well.

"So that you feel strong, strong and fit." Then the heat is no longer an obstacle.

"Even at 35 degrees, people have to find each other to donate blood," explains Nohe.

The summer holidays are also a concern for him – and the many vacationers.

His request: "Donate blood before you go on vacation." He fears that people who want to book an appointment and see that it's taken will give up immediately.

"But that's how it has to be.

If the dates are not fully utilized, we have a problem,” says Nohe.

Because even today, there is no artificial alternative to human blood.

"Blood donation is extremely important - it saves lives," says Peter Bauer, member of the state parliament for the Free Voters and patient representative of the state government.

He knows the problems blood donation shortage can cause.

“It really is the worst thing that can happen to us.

Because in emergencies, each of us is dependent on someone else's blood.” Nohe also emphasizes this.

“We all need to realize that donating blood is an irreplaceable service to society.

And we simply have to show more respect to these everyday helpers.”
