From Vivaldi to yodels, from Don Camillo and Peppone to criticism of the Pope: the farewell party for Tutzing's Catholic pastor Peter Brummer was a serious and humorous interplay.

Tutzing

– To start with, Tutzing's Mayor Marlene Greinwald interviewed Starnberg District Administrator Stefan Frey: even this distribution of roles was something special at the farewell party for Peter Brummer.

Then Greinwald announced that the outgoing pastor would be given honorary citizenship in Tutzing, and Bernried's former mayor, Josef Steigenberger, brought him the Golden Hofmark Medal as an award from his community.

Seriousness and profound humor constantly alternated on this Friday evening in the Roncallihaus.

The speakers ranged from Dr Ute Eiling-Hütig, member of the state parliament, to Dieter Arcypowski from the fruit and horticultural association.

A clown appeared, the evangelical pastor Beate Frankenberger trained the laughing muscles of the audience with imaginative sketches before the objectivity came to the fore.

Again and again there were respectful references to the church asylum that Brummer had granted to 49 refugees and in the process had tangled with the state authorities.

Most of the people were integrated into the German asylum procedure, stressed Claudia Steinke, chairwoman of the ecumenical support group.

"You mustn't let yourself be intimidated," exclaimed Claus Peter Reisch.

The skipper, rescuer of hundreds of refugees, came to Tutzing like many others especially for this celebration.

Years ago, Brummer inspired him to support him - the basis of two significant fundraising campaigns "Tutzing helps in the Mediterranean".

Reisch brought greetings from Mechthild Thürmer, the abbess of the Benedictine abbey in Kirchschletten, who received a penalty order from the Bamberg public prosecutor's office for church asylum.

Ruth Schönenberger, prioress of the Tutzinger Missionary Benedictine Sisters, confirmed Brummer: "Your commitment to the church asylum has given us the courage to get involved as well." The pastor represents his point of view and will not be dissuaded by anything or anyone, said Angela Richter, Rector of Benedictus Realschule.

Dean Simon Rapp from Herrsching described Brummer, with whom he once worked as an intern in Steppach near Augsburg, as a “beneficially critical, sometimes a little annoying and argumentative spirit”.

“I know that I can be exhausting,” commented Brummer, “I really annoyed some people.” But he also said: “Overall, we are far too good at our job.” His collar seemed to burst when he reported on the Pope's recent rejection of the "Synodal Path" reform process proclaimed by Germany's Catholic bishops.

"My God - where are the bishops?" he exclaimed.

"I can't hear it anymore." And he added: "Perhaps we have to stand up even more when it comes to the renewal of the church - we are all church." Michael Saurier, head of hospital chaplaincy in the diocese of Augsburg, recalled the In 1945, the Jesuits executed Alfred Delp, who shortly before his death had called for the churches to return to diakonia – to serve people.
