Identification cards for undocumented migrants: how they work, what they are for, and when they will be available

A pilot program plans to grant IDs with a photo and a QR code to access an app with judicial information and other types of documents, and relevant data on the migrant.

The government presided over by Joe Biden plans to launch a pilot program that would grant temporary identification cards (IDs) to migrants who are waiting for their asylum applications to be resolved, according to the information website Axios.

Many migrants who illegally cross the border from Mexico into the United States do not carry identification, which makes it difficult to assign them transportation, housing, health coverage and other social assistance.

To try to solve this legal limbo, the Department of Homeland Security has budgeted for a $10 million pilot plan called the

ICE Secure Docket Card.

The new cards will have a photograph, a QR code that offers access to an application with judicial information and other types of documents about their cases and other relevant data, according to Axios, which would also reduce the burden of information requests they face. federal immigration authorities.

Although the authorities are still finalizing the details of this pilot project, according to Axios, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) service has advanced that "Secure Docket Card is part of a pilot program to modernize various forms of documentation provided released non-citizens with consistent, verifiable and secure identification"

The IDs will allow undocumented immigrants to prove that they are within the US immigration system, provide accurate information about their location and complete paperwork online, instead of standing in long lines at ICE offices.

They would be delivered to migrants who are not detained in an ICE center who crossed the border illegally or who lack papers but are within the immigration system or even deportation.

It would serve them well, for example, to prove in case of being detained by the police or immigration agents that their situation is regulated.

In addition, according to Axios, it would encourage migrants to offer information about their whereabouts to facilitate contact with them.

From there, its use could be extended to facilitate the opening of bank accounts or even air travel.

In any case, the federal government has not yet offered estimates of when they will be available and how many people will be able to access them within the aforementioned pilot program.

In its attempt to reverse the strict immigration policies of its predecessor, Donald Trump, the Joe Biden Administration has tried to focus ICE detentions on migrants with a criminal record or newcomers to the country, although the justice system has blocked those guidelines for now.

In addition, he has expanded alternative-to-arrest programs, which use apps and GPS devices to track migrants instead of locking them up.
