The Ministry of Health published today (Monday) instructions for the vaccination campaign against the monkeypox disease, and defined the criteria according to which it will be determined who will receive the vaccine.

According to the document, the vaccine - which will be given in one dose and in exceptional cases in two doses - is intended mainly for men aged 18 and over, born in 1980 and later, who are at high risk of the disease.

These are men receiving treatment to prevent HIV infection (HIV PrEP) or those who were both infected with HIV and diagnosed from the beginning of 2022 with the sexually transmitted diseases syphilis, chlamydia or gonorrhea.

The Ministry of Health recommends considering an interval of four weeks between the monkeypox vaccine and the corona vaccine, especially among young men, except in the case of exposure to the new epidemic.

The ministry does not rule out vaccination of other groups in the population while exercising discretion, including nursing women and children, in cases of significant exposure to the virus.

According to the document, possible side effects to the vaccine include redness, swelling, stiffness, itching, muscle pain, headache, fatigue, nausea and chills.

How do you get infected with the virus?

Monkeypox (in English: monkeypox) - is a viral disease that is often manifested by fever, vesicular rash and enlarged lymph nodes.

It was first discovered among animals, and in 1970 the first human infected with the virus was found.

The name of the disease came up again at the beginning of 2022 after a case of infection in the UK that was discovered in a person who had returned from Nigeria, and over time many thousands were diagnosed in the world and a few people died.

The disease can be contracted from another person, from an infected animal, or - less likely - from a contaminated object.

Human-to-human transmission may occur by droplet transmission from a close distance.

It also occurs in direct contact with the rash or with body fluids or with contaminated objects such as dishes, sheets, clothes and bandages.

It is also possible to become infected during sexual intercourse, apparently following continuous contact with lesions on the skin and mucous membranes.
