A young Latino man who was knocked unconscious more than two weeks ago in a crowd fight during a California high school football game died Monday.

Misael Sánchez, 29, of Port Hueneme, a coastal town 50 miles north of Los Angeles, was hospitalized on July 10 “after being involved in a major soccer fight involving players from both teams and spectators”, according to the police of Oxnard, the city that includes that locality.

The fight came after a referee's decision with which neither team agreed, according to the police after the match.

Sánchez was on the field playing with one of the two teams and during the fight he was assaulted by multiple assailants.

Forensic experts will carry out an autopsy on Tuesday to determine the causes of death, according to local authorities, who asked for citizen collaboration to obtain a video of the fight.

“During the initial investigation, witnesses helped identify a suspect.

But additional information and evidence is needed to determine how the assault occurred and identify those involved," police said last week.

"Agents believe there were spectators in the stands, players from both teams and other people at the game, who witnessed the fight," they added, "and they also believe there are people who may have recorded the fight."
