“Madame de La Fayette always goes up the Rhône very slowly. And I, my daughter, I love you with the same inclination as this river goes from Lyon to the sea
,” wrote Madame de Sévigné on July 30, 1677. 110 years later, it took Thomas Jefferson 14 days to travel the banks of the Rhône from Lyon to Marseille, on excellent roads that he descended through romantic landscapes, admiring the plain on either side of the river, planted with clover and almond trees.
“It was here that I saw my first butterfly,”
he noted in his diary.
In Pont-Saint-Esprit, a bronze plaque affixed to the wall of the Saint-Pierre priory commemorates the passage of the United States ambassador on March 19, 1787.
