Opinion The Palestinian Authority: a transparent dictatorship Israel today

2022-07-26T20:55:58.535Z

The Palestinian Authority was established about three decades ago, and never pretended to be a democracy. Therefore, it is only a matter of time before the new generation rises up against the ruling leadership today.

This week it was published here, in "Israel Hayom", that a report prepared by the "View of the Palestinian Media" institute warned that there is a serious concern that the head of the Palestinian Authority is leading the Authority to a dictatorship. I did not understand who still expects democracy.

Democracy can exist in a state or a strong autonomous entity, where there is a separation of powers.

The Palestinian Authority was established about three decades ago, and never claimed to be a democracy.

The struggle of the Fatah people who control it against the other factions that oppose it, such as the Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front and Hamas, is known and known from the first day when a Palestinian policeman carried a weapon and received authority in the Palestinian cities, including in Gaza.

It is difficult to see a democratic basis in the Authority, which was established with international guarantees and with the assistance of Israel, mainly due to the absence of a functioning parliament elected by the people and the absence of an independent judicial authority.

The situation in the PA, far from the Israeli context and far from the struggle to establish an independent Palestinian state, is bleak and difficult, and is characterized by close appointments and corruption, similar to centralized totalitarian regimes.

The members of the Authority, especially the members of Fatah, fight with great cruelty anyone who does not align with them, at any time and on any issue, and their actions endanger human rights; in quite a few cases, the opponents of the Chairman of the Authority and his policies, who have exposed corruption or even expressed themselves in a manner contrary to the opinion of Yo The head of the Authority paid for it with their lives; the last was the activist Nizar Banat, who was arrested in his home alive, and died during the investigation carried out by the Authority's investigators. During the past year, no answers were provided regarding the circumstances of his death and no suspects were arrested, and no investigation was even opened.

We received another example last weekend, when militants affiliated with Fatah shot and wounded Dr. Nasser Sha'er, a senior at An-Najah University, former Minister of Higher Education and Deputy Prime Minister of Palestine.

Here too, as with Banat, condemnations were heard from all sides, even from Fatah members, even though all PA residents know who is behind this incident.

The Palestinian street is boiling today more than ever.

The corruption, the appointment of associates and the political struggles between Fatah members and anyone who opposes or dares to criticize the PA's policies and may pay for it with his life. The local and international human rights organizations cannot act, due to the lack of any protection for them, the judicial system is controlled by PA politicians , the media is weak and does not dare to criticize, and it is very easy to silence those who nevertheless dare to tweet or expose governmental irregularities - their mouths are gagged in the name of "the struggle against the Israeli occupation". Therefore, it is only a matter of time until the first spark of protest from the new Palestinian generation Weber will blaze against the ruling leadership today.
