Pompeo says to visit Taiwan with Pelosi

In the early morning of July 25, local time, former U.S. Secretary of State Michael Pompeo posted on social media that he would visit Taiwan with Nancy Pelosi.

He said, "Nancy, I will go with you. I was banned in China, but not in freedom-loving Taiwan. See you!"

Pompeo publicly stated not long ago that he would consider running for the 2024 US presidential election. This time Pompeo said that he would join Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, with the intention of creating a tough image on China and winning the support of populists.

At present, Pompeo's visit to Taiwan is not as simple as a visit by a former dignitary. He said he would go with Pelosi, and now Pelosi has not yet decided whether to visit Taiwan.

Pelosi has publicly stated at a press conference on the 21st that she has never stated any travel itinerary in advance.

The White House is trying to prevent Pelosi from visiting Taiwan.

According to the "Washington Post" report on July 23, the Biden administration is increasingly worried that Pelosi's visit to Taiwan may trigger a major crisis in the Taiwan Strait, and the White House and a series of national security officials are trying to dissuade her.

Defense, military and intelligence officials, including General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, have "attempted [to her] to explain the risks associated with the timing of the trip," according to a White House official who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Washington Post wrote, "White House officials are treading carefully to dissuade Pelosi without sparking a public spat, but there is widespread concern within the White House about the potential consequences of Pelosi's visit to Taiwan."

Another British media reported that China has privately issued more severe warnings to the United States, including a possible military response.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan opposes Pelosi's planned visit to Taiwan.

Burns, the US ambassador to China, temporarily changed his Washington schedule this week and returned to Beijing ahead of schedule.

The premise of going to Taiwan with Pelosi is that Pelosi will go. With the White House objecting and Pelosi not confirming the itinerary, Pompeo's remarks have the meaning of forcing Pelosi to visit.
