At least four people were killed and 60 injured by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the Philippines on Wednesday, the nation's Interior Secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr. said at a news conference.

The earthquake was recorded in northern Luzon, the country's most populous island, at 8:43 am local time (8:43 pm ET), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

The agency originally designated the quake's magnitude as 7.1, before downgrading it to 7.0.

According to Abalos, 58 landslides have been recorded since the earthquake, which has so far affected 218 villages in 15 Luzon provinces and destroyed three bridges.

Abra, the province where the earthquake struck, is a landlocked region known for its deep valleys and mountainous terrain.
