Pollution: the mayor of Marseille himself launches a petition against cruise ships

Benoît Payan's petition calls for the port to be banned for the least clean ships, especially cruise ships, during peak temperatures.

Because "Marseille is suffocating", its mayor Benoît Payan launched a petition on the city's website and on social networks calling for a ban on access to the port for the most polluting ships during ozone peaks.

The Marseille city has just had a level 2 for 8 days with the implementation of alternating traffic for cars.

With already nearly 40,000 signatures on Wednesday July 27, the petition targets cruise ships in particular, while 1.8 million cruise passengers are expected to stop over this year.

“We feel, we see, we breathe the pollution and, with the heat wave, it is reaching new heights.

We have cruise ships that get dirty, that spit their smoke on our shores with complete impunity and that is no longer possible, justifies Benoît Payan.

That's as much pollution as 1 million cars.

Marseille demands new protection standards

The city, which has already withdrawn from the Club Croisières which promotes the Marseille stopover with foreign shipping companies, will seize the International Maritime Organization and the State to "make the way of the Mediterranean and its cities heard".

Last February, Marseille had already brought together the mayors of 24 other metropolises around the Mediterranean, from Beirut to Tangier, to demand new standards for the protection of the environment and health.

Defenders of the cruise economy point out that the most recent ships of the MSC and Costa companies already run on LNG and can be supplied in the port.

They also highlight the regional plan "Escales zero smoke" for the electrification of the quays, a time stopped by the pandemic, which should end in 2025. The city of Marseille has also just announced that it will finance it up to 10 million euros.
