The American administration proposed to the Kremlin to conduct a prisoner exchange - this was announced this evening (Wednesday) on the CNN network.
According to the report, the United States will release two Russian arms dealers in exchange for two of its citizens, basketball player Brittany Griner and Paul Whelan, who was accused of espionage and has been held in Russia since 2018.
Sources familiar with the matter said that President Joe Biden supports the deal, after the possibility was raised earlier this year.
A senior US administration official told CNN that he believes the deal will go through successfully, following previous talks with officials in Russia.
The official refused to elaborate on the details of the proposal, but explained that now it is Russia's turn to make a move.
"It takes two to tango. We start all the talks to bring Americans home," said the senior.
"We started the talks with parties who took human beings and treat them as bargaining chips."

The families of Willen and Griner, who was arrested in Moscow for drug possession, are pleading with the White House to hold a prisoner exchange deal.
Earlier this month, Griner admitted to possessing drugs but claimed she did not do it on purpose, but she still faces up to 10 years in prison.
According to senior American officials who are familiar with the proceedings in Russia, her trial will probably have to be completed before a deal between the countries is implemented.
During the last months that the possibility of a prisoner exchange deal was discussed in the United States, the US Department of Justice opposed the move.
According to the officials in the administration who oppose the possibility, such a deal will only encourage more countries to arrest and hold other American citizens as bargaining chips.
