The United Nations Human Rights Committee completed its regular review of the situation in Hong Kong and reported its findings on July 27. The committee urged the Hong Kong government to take action to repeal the Hong Kong National Security Law.
In a press release, the committee said it was deeply concerned about an overly broad interpretation of the National Security Law for Hong Kong, saying that since its enactment in 2020, more than 200 people have been arrested, including 12 children.
The Committee also expresses its concern that since the promulgation of the National Security Law for Hong Kong, many civil society organizations in Hong Kong, such as trade unions and student unions, have relocated or ceased operations.
"The committee urges Hong Kong to take action to repeal the Hong Kong National Security Law, and to refrain from using it at this time," Christopher Arif Balkan, vice-chairman of the committee, told the media.
A spokesman for the Hong Kong Constitutional and Mainland Affairs Bureau responded on the same day, saying that the committee is very disappointed by the unfounded criticism of the Hong Kong SAR.
