The access for cyclists from the B2 is to be reopened immediately - and the exit for motor traffic is to be closed: This is what Weilheim's Greens are demanding for Admiral-Hipper-Straße.

Weilheim – The Greens faction in the Weilheim city council is calling for an immediate change in traffic routing on Admiral-Hipper-Strasse: cyclists should be able to access this street again immediately, coming from the B2.

Because of the bottleneck caused by the construction site, "Admiral-Hipper-Strasse should also be closed to motor vehicle traffic from the end of the Boneberger car park".

Instead, the area between the Hofstrasse junction and these car parks should be managed “in two-way traffic”.

"This closure was already in effect during the recent renovation of the B2 and has proven very effective," write the Greens in their emergency motion, which is to be discussed in the city council on Thursday, July 28th.

Demand of the Greens: Rules as during the B2 renovation

Reason for the application: Three weeks ago, the city initially lifted the regulation that had been in force for a good three years, that cycling in the opposite direction to the one-way direction on Admiral-Hipper-Straße was allowed (we reported).

Because of the extensive renovation work on the town hall, for which a crane has now been erected, this street is now narrowed - for about a year, according to the city administration.

According to the current status, cyclists are not allowed to enter Hipper-Straße from Obere Stadt or the B2 for that long.

However, the Greens criticize this solution.

The possibility of being able to drive on Admiral-Hipper-Straße in an east-west direction is essential for the "safety and continuity of bicycle traffic on one of the main routes through the center of Weilheim", write parliamentary group spokesman Manuel Neulinger and his deputy Brigitte Gronau.

As a result of the current change, there are “increased dangerous situations, as cyclists coming from the upper town either switch to the sidewalk or drive into Admiral-Hipper-Straße anyway”.

Dead end rule would also eliminate noise from car posers

By accepting their application, the city council can "send an important signal for the safety of cyclists and for a reduction in CO2 emissions," emphasize the Greens.

The blocking of motor vehicle traffic between Boneberger and Rathaus-Ampel during the B2 refurbishment “also led to a positive response from residents and shop operators”: “It was welcomed that the noise from so-called car posers was reduced by this dead end regulation is prevented.

All parking spaces are still available for absolutely necessary car journeys.

The 'new' oncoming traffic was not a problem during the construction phase on the B2, since fewer cars were driving into Admiral-Hipper-Straße."
