Seven people were killed as a result of lightning that struck a village in the state of Uttar Pradesh in northern India, bringing the number of victims of these lightning strikes to 49 people in the state this week.
The Associated Press quoted Indian police as saying that the farmers took refuge in the trees during heavy monsoon rains when they were struck by lightning.
Which led to the death of seven people, including four members of one family, in the city of Kochambi in the state.
State government spokesman Cheshir Singh said the rising death toll had prompted the government to issue new guidelines for how people should protect themselves during the thunderstorm.
It is noteworthy that the monsoon season in India runs from June to September.
In turn, an official at the Indian Meteorological Department said that lightning has killed nearly 750 people across India since last April, noting that deforestation, depletion of water bodies and pollution are all contributing factors to climate change, which leads to more thunderstorms.
