The Fürstenfeldbruck air base is to be completely dissolved by 2026.
One of the most renowned facilities of the Bundeswehr, which is still on the site, now says goodbye - not very quietly and with a good dose of melancholy.
Fürstenfeldbruck - "Now the time has come," said the head of the Center for Aerospace Medicine from Cologne-Wahn, Doctor General Bernhard Groß, at the opening of the ceremony on the occasion of the farewell to Fursty's military department.
After more than 60 years, the Aeromedical Institute – FlugMed for short – of the Air Force, which is probably still better known to the general public, is leaving the Brucker air base.
Flugmed: The merger
The departments still in Fursty should be merged with the center in Cologne-Wahn by the beginning of October.
“It means saying goodbye to the location and to the city of Fürstenfeldbruck, in which we felt very comfortable.
At the same time, it also means setting out to open a new chapter in the Air Force's aerospace medicine," said Groß.
Groß used the ceremony to commemorate 60 successful years in aerospace medicine in Fursty.
The presence of the mayor and the deputy district administrator shows the connection, recognition and appreciation of the city and the district to the air base, says Groß.
He assured that this bond would be taken with them and remembered at the new location.
Flugmed: Farewell with gratitude
After 60 years it's time to say goodbye.
Unfortunately, said the deputy district administrator Martina Drechsler (CSU).
The mood of the workforce indicates that they are a bit sad that such a traditional location is being given up.
"They leave Fürstenfeldbruck with melancholy and gratitude.
But that's how it is for us too," said Drechsler.
"We are grateful that an internationally recognized institution of military aviation medicine had its home here for over six decades." It was an honor.
"We say thank you out loud and say goodbye quietly," Martina Drechsler continues.

The cooperation is always characterized by a special bond.
Flugmed: Proud of history
"The city was and is proud of this long history," says Lord Mayor Raff. The air base is considered the home of military aviation medicine.
At the suggestion of the city and district, the center was awarded the banner of the Bavarian Prime Minister in 2019, Raff recalled. "This rare award expresses the special appreciation and gratitude of the Free State for the performance of the Bundeswehr and the deep connection to the city and district."
As a farewell, Raff presented the head of the center, Generalarzt Gross, with a watercolor on behalf of the city.
It shows the market square, the Amper Bridge and the Leonhard Church.
