Fuel prices: which brands are offering a boost this summer?

At the end of June, the Minister of Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire, decided to step up to the plate to encourage the private sector to take a greater part in the fight against high gasoline prices.

He believes that the government is already doing its best with the introduction of a discount of 18 euro cents per litre, which will soon be increased.

The rebate on petroleum products comes against a backdrop of high inflation, which has driven up prices at the pump.

Motorists can, however, play the competition to try to save on refueling.

A reduction of 12 cents directly on the liter of fuel at TotalEnergies

Among the suppliers, TotalEnergies has chosen to directly apply an additional discount on the price at the pump.

The latter, applied in motorway stations, is added to the rebate granted by the executive, further reducing the bill.

TotalEnergies stresses on its website its commitment to inflation.

This measure was introduced after the intervention of Bruno Le Maire, who had specifically urged the company to make an “

extra effort

” towards motorists, in anticipation of the holidays.

TotalEnergies announced Thursday, June 29 a reduction of 12 cents per liter of gasoline in all its stations on the motorway.

This measure applies from July 1 and for the entire duration of the summer holidays, that is to say until August 31.

The rebate will then be reinforced: from September 1 to November 1, it will rise to 20 cents per litre, in all TotalEnergies stations in France.

It will then drop to 10 cents, between November and December.

These reductions will apply "

from the first liter purchased, without limit of amount, for all petroleum fuels sold in stations

", specifies the company.

They also allow the group to show its commitment against inflation, while some elected officials called for the creation of a tax on the “

superprofits

” made by certain companies for several months.

At the same time, Leclerc is going to organise, on the last weekend of July, a fuel operation at cost price.

This will be operational from Thursday evening and it will concern all the stations of Leclerc shopping centers, said the emblematic boss of the distributor, Michel-Edouard Leclerc, on FranceInfo, recently.

Reduce food prices, if not fuel prices

Not all brands are mobilizing to directly reduce the price of gasoline.

Avia “

does not communicate

”, thus, and Intermarché specifies that it does not have “

a fuel operation planned to date

”.

Same observation for Auchan, Carrefour and Système U. Head of press relations for the latter group, Thierry Desouches explains this lack of direct measurement with an economic argument: "

We just have to keep in mind that we have to keep our finances in balance and you should know that our margin is infinitesimal on fuel.

The price of fuel is a loss leader but already the initiatives of the beginning have calmed down

”, pleads the representative of the distributor.

As for BP service stations, the group has indicated that there will be no "

additional commercial gesture to those already planned by the State and motorway companies due to strong pressure on energy prices

motorway companies are setting price caps for all fuel distributors on motorway networks subject to tolls

”.

Relieve the portfolio of retail customers

Some players still act to relieve the portfolio of their customers, by betting on lower food prices.

This is the case at Auchan or at BP, which “

will offer menus at reduced prices in our food stores as well as attractive menu offers in our catering outlets

”.

Intermarché gives pride of place to its customers who have the loyalty card, while Carrefour is strengthening its promotional food offers.

The Casino brands (Géant Hypermarkets, Supermarkets, Small Casino, Spar, Vival) offer to reduce the bill, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, by reimbursing the user the difference between the price paid for a full tank and 0 .85 euros.

Several conditions are set: reimbursement is made in the form of vouchers, which must imperatively be used on weekends as well, “

from 100 euros spent

” in the store.

It is also done “

within the limit of 50 liters per vehicle and per ticket

”.

Finally, the offer will remain in place every weekend of the summer and will end in September.

This reduction in the price of gasoline therefore necessarily implies shopping in the various Casino stores.

The informed consumer will therefore be able to compare the offers of the different brands to best protect his portfolio.

The situation may change in September, the executive then wishing to change the discount per liter, by increasing it sharply.
