Schwangau - The Marien Bridge over the Pöllat Gorge near Neuschwanstein Castle is now open again.

This was announced by the Ministry of Finance at noon today.

"From now on, all visitors can once again experience the view of the world-famous Neuschwanstein Castle from the Marienbrücke!" Albert Füracker (CSU), the Bavarian Minister of Finance and Homeland responsible for Neuschwanstein Castle and the Marienbrücke, is quoted in a press release from the ministry.

The popular excursion destination 90 meters above the wild and romantic Pöllat was closed in February 2021 due to repair work.

According to Füracker, these have now been completed.

As reported, a monitoring system installed in 2016 showed irregularities in the force curve of a rock anchor.

The subsequent static investigations revealed that it was necessary to replace existing rock anchors, which were drilled up to 15 meters into the rock, or to set additional ones.

The state building authority in Kempten was responsible for the work.

"In 81 helicopter flights over ten days, the new anchors were transported to the high alpine mountains of the Pöllat Gorge.

Three skilled workers from a special civil engineering company set the anchors in the rock again," reports the minister.

Particularly pleasing from his point of view: "The renovation cost around 500,000 euros less than originally planned and was completed within ten weeks without any delay."

Long history

King Maximilian II had paths and vantage points created in the Hohenschwangau area so that he could enjoy the landscape.

As a birthday present for his mountaineering wife Marie, he had a wooden footbridge built high above the Pöllatbach in the 1850s.

Maximilian's son, King Ludwig II, had this footbridge replaced with a bridge in an elegant iron construction.

The way the bridge was constructed was a novelty at the time: without any additional supports, the bridge spans the steep Pöllat Gorge and is only held in place by the anchorages fixed in the rock on both sides.

Ludwig II always had a soft spot for technical innovations.

In 1978 the historic bridge had to be replaced by a new one.

Only the historical railings could be reused.

Neuschwanstein Castle and the Marienbrücke are managed by the Bavarian Administration for State Palaces, Gardens and Lakes.
