USA - Committee of Inquiry into Massacres: "The Murderers Are Responsible"

2022-07-28T14:02:17.672Z

In video messages, relatives describe how they lost their loved ones: A US investigative committee confronted arms manufacturers with the suffering of the victims after the recent massacres. They reacted coldly.

David Sallak, Survivor, Highland Park Shooting:

I pushed my wife and son behind a park bench to save our lives.

After the shooting stopped, I saw Cooper Roberts' father screaming for help.

My wife saw Cooper on the floor convulsing.

The shot went through the stomach and spine.«

Committee meeting in the US House of Representatives.

Carolyn Maloney: "Quiet please!"

After the recent gun massacres in the United States, the Democratic chair of the parliament's main investigative body confronted the bosses of two weapons manufacturers with video messages from survivors and relatives.

Carolyn Maloney, Committee Chair (Democrat):

"How many more American children have to die before your company stops selling assault rifles to civilians and children—the weapons of choice in most of our country's shooting sprees?"

Marty Daniel, CEO "Daniel Defense":

"Representative Maloney, I believe these killings are local problems that need to be solved locally.

I believe that…"

Carolyn Maloney, Committee Chair (Democrat):

“Okay.

My time is short and I have to get to the next question.

Mr. Killoy, how about you?

Is there any number of massacres in schools and churches and synagogues that would make you stop selling weapons of war to civilians?”

Christopher Killoy, CEO »Sturm, Ruger & Company«:

»With all due respect, Honorable Member, I would not describe the modern sporting weapons that my company produces as weapons of war.«

Attacks on an elementary school in Uvalde, a supermarket in Buffalo and an Independence Day parade in Highland Park alone have killed 38 people in the past two months.

Tracey Maciulewicz, Relatives, Buffalo:

"My fiancé, Terry, was shot by a racist on May 14

(kid on lap asks,

'Daddy?') while he was going downtown to buy our son a birthday cake."

Jasmine Cazares, relatives, Uvalde:

»Hi.

I'm Jasmine Cazares.

I'm 17 years old and I lost my little sister, Jackie, in the Uvalde, Texas school shooting."

The perpetrator in the Texas elementary school shot, among other things, with an assault rifle manufactured by Daniel Defense.

Carolyn Maloney, Committee Chair (Democrat):

"Do you take personal responsibility for your company's role in this tragedy and do you apologize to the Uvalde families?"

Marty Daniel, CEO "Daniel Defense":

"Representative Maloney, these acts are committed by murderers.

The killers are responsible.”

The statement once again cements the well-known mantra of the US gun lobby: It is the perpetrator who kills, not the gun.

It is unlikely that this interpretation will change after the committee of inquiry.

Despite the incredible suffering that the victims and their relatives have to endure.

Again and again.
