FC Carl Zeiss Jena narrowly missed the cup sensation against VfL Wolfsburg with new coach Niko Kovac.
The regional league football team from Thuringia lost 0-1 (0-0) against the Bundesliga team on Saturday evening.
In front of 6100 spectators in the Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld, the Lower Saxony only scored in injury time through Omar Khaled Marmoush (90.
Jena - +3) the winning goal.
Wolfsburg initially started out superior in terms of play, but thanks to their technical superiority they tried to shine, while Jena went about their work with more fighting spirit.
Both teams created good chances, but were too unfocused at the end.
Jonas Wind (9th/17th) had the greatest opportunities to lead VfL.
Jena used the spaces when countering, but was too imprecise in the last third.
The fourth-rate Jena team, who knocked out Hamburger SV in the cup in 2014, continued to play bravely.
Kovac reacted and brought on Jacub Kaminski and Josuha Guilavogui after just over an hour.
That almost brought the lead: But Jena's goalkeeper Kevin Kunz brilliantly parried the header from newcomer Kaminski (67th).
In the final phase, Jena was almost completely behind and was visible in terms of strength at the end, but Wolfsburg continued to struggle.
Only Marmoush redeemed the first division team in injury time with a header to victory.
