The workshops for children constitute an important part of the work program of the Russian Cultural Center in Damascus, as each workshop is devoted to a specific aspect that develops children's artistic and cognitive abilities.
The Russian Cultural Center dedicated its workshop, which was held this morning, to the children of the Circassian Assembly to introduce them to the Russian matryoshka, which are wooden pieces inside each other and symbolize the Russian mother, who embraces a large number of children inside.
The wood is prepared for the matryoshka in the spring to dry for a year or two. Each mold is subjected to more than 10 operations. First, the smallest non-separate doll is made. At the end of the process, each doll is painted with varnish, and then the artist begins to decorate it using both oil and water-based dyes.
It used to be that a woman in traditional Russian dress was drawn on the surface of the matryoshka, but her form has diversified at the present time, as landscapes from Russia and mythical characters are painted on her, along with family members, including mother, father and children.
The supervisor of the workshop, Aya Shehadeh, spoke about the Russian folklore, and singled out the matryoshka as a main title, through which she explained its meaning and its relationship to family bonding and the mother's love and embrace of her children inside her, which is one of the symbols of ancient Russian art.
Director of the Russian Cultural Center Nikolai Sukhov told SANA reporter that the workshop hosted by the center was devoted to introducing children to the Russian matryoshka, its symbolism, history, and tools for its manufacture, stressing that this workshop is part of a group of workshops that the center will hold, the most prominent of which will be a workshop in the art of glass in partnership with the Ministry of Industry.
