Munich – A Bavarian Radio format is not only causing a stir on the Internet – even the Bavarian state government is now speaking up.

Once again it is the topic of gender that heats up the mind.

This time, Claudia Stamm, ex-Greens politician, is the focus of criticism.

Gender in BR format: presenter avoids faux pas in panel discussion

On May 31, she will moderate the online panel discussion "Diversity Talk 2022".

The format is aimed at students.

In the 42-minute video, Stamm speaks to five guests – students, a singer, a journalist and BR spokesman Markus Huber.

The topic "Genders: fad or language (r)evolution" online surveys among students will appear.

Result: Many young people consider gender language to be unnecessary.

"Welcome, you students, you students, your students," says Stamm at the beginning.

In her introduction, Stamm plays through almost every possible gender-appropriate address.

This type of moderation says nothing about your own attitude, says Stamm in the video.

Two of the guests in the studio later spoke out against gender, including BR spokesman Huber.

At the end of the discussion, the online survey is repeated.

Has the attitude of students watching the live broadcast changed?

Result: The students still clearly reject gender language.

Stamm reads out the values ​​– and comments: “Unfortunately”, even after the discussion, no one thinks gender is great.

Network and state government criticize BR: specify gender language from above?

She sees the result as a "call" to repeat the event in 2023.

She has received massive criticism for this on the Internet.

But something is brewing in the real world too.

Florian Herrmann (CSU), head of the Bavarian State Chancellery and Minister for the Media, calls the BR format “fee-financed forced gender”.

"It's not the job of public service broadcasters to campaign for minority opinions," he says.

Herrmann is irritated by the fact that BR causes gender language to be specified from above until it “reaches below”.

Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) had recently been critical of the issue of gender in an interview.

The Broadcasting Council, he says, must clarify the matter at the next meeting.

The BR defends itself: "The claim that it is a gender show that aims to convince students is simply wrong," says BR spokesman Markus Huber.

The aim was an exchange of views on gender language.

Claudia Stamm also says this in an interview with our newspaper.

"In no way did I mean to say that we have to keep talking until everyone agrees." Besides, she says, she hardly ever genders in everyday life.
