DHL is building a new distribution center at Munich Airport, which should be ready by the end of 2024 and will offer 140 jobs.

Now was the groundbreaking.

Airport

– Few sectors have grown as strongly in Corona times as logistics and online mail order.

An end to the boom is not in sight.

The Post subsidiary DHL Express is now reacting to this – and is repositioning itself for the next 25 years.

It is building a “gateway”, a distribution center, on the freight mile at Munich Airport and is thus seven times the size of its previous operating area in the Erdinger Moos.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Erding newsletter.)

The investment is worth 104 million euros, and DHL Express wants to double the number of its 72 employees who have been working here so far.

How unusual such an XXL project is in economically difficult times was demonstrated by the celebrities who attended the groundbreaking ceremony - in addition to Markus Reckling, head of DHL Express Germany, Bavaria's head of state chancellery, Florian Herrmann, and FMG managing directors Jost Lammers and Nathalie Leroy.

The new express freight transhipment center is being built on two former FMG car parks opposite the Munich Lufthansa headquarters with a direct connection to the southern runway and the cargo apron.

The total area is more than 11,000 square meters, and the production area is 8,800 square meters.

In addition, DHL Express creates 2,200 square meters of office space and social rooms.

The transshipment takes place via two docks with 65 loading positions.

Airside there are daily cargo flights from the main distribution center in Leipzig, four weekly flights from the East Midlands (UK) and once a week from Malpensa (Milan) in Italy.

The service area of the "Gateway" extends to Nuremberg in the north, to Straubing in the north-east, Bad Aibling in the south and Neu-Ulm in the west.

When the contract was signed a year ago, there was still talk of investment costs of 70 million euros, but the “yellow giant” already calculates 104 million euros for the new plans.

Reckling announced that it would double the number of employees to 140.

The terminal is scheduled to go into operation at the end of 2024. DHL Express will then give up its “niche” in the cargo area of Moos Airport, according to Reckling.

The symbolic ground-breaking ceremony was held by DHL Munich deputy Timo Köpsel, Head of State Florian Herrmann, Nathalie Leroy (FMG), Markus Reckling (DHL Express) and Airport Manager Jost Lammers (from left).

Reckling reported that the expansion was urgently needed in order to widen a bottleneck in the delivery of urgent freight - "We deliver shipments from anywhere in the world in a maximum of three days" - and that in a growth region like Bavaria.

The DHL Express Germany boss assured that the new building will be built according to the latest standards - with a roof photovoltaic system, heat pump and connection to the district heating network of the airport, as well as energy-saving LED lighting.

He also sees DHL as an important and reliable employer in the airport region.

Head of State Herrmann was impressed by the high level of investment in such unsettled times.

The entire area surrounding the airport benefits from this.

"The fact that the number of employees is to be doubled to 140 is very good news," says Herrmann.

The new “gateway” is a commitment by Swiss Post to the airport and Bavaria as a location.

"I'm very happy about that." The decision is a vote of confidence in the airport's performance and strengthens Bavaria's role as an export location.

FMG boss Lammers said: "We are very happy." With its new distribution center, DHL Express is contributing to the success story of the airport and strengthening it as a global air traffic hub.

Lammers recalled the deprivation of the Corona period.

The groundbreaking shows: "We are out of the crisis, confidence in the location is back." DHL already knows Lammers from his time as head of Budapest Airport.

"We tackled three projects together," he emphasized before everyone grabbed the spade.
