The areas planted with the molokhia crop in the lands under the supervision of the General Authority for the Management and Development of the Forest amounted to 96 hectares out of the total plan planned for the current season, which amounts to 50 hectares, with an implementation rate of more than 90 percent.
The Director of Plant Wealth in the Authority, Engineer Wafiq Zarouf, told SANA reporter that the reason for the increase in the areas planted with molokhia is due to its short production cycle and lower costs compared to other crops, and its price has increased significantly in recent years, as it is sold green as well as dried and sold dry, indicating that the most important places for cultivation are in the Al-Ghab region. These are Salhab, Asharna, Nahr El-Bared and Ain El-Krum.
Zaroof pointed out that the expectations of molokhia production for this season amount to 1,344 tons, as a large number of families work in the Al-Ghab area by harvesting the crop, preparing it, drying its green leaves and saving it as supplies for the winter, as large quantities of it are sold outside the governorate, especially in the coast.
