The union pointed out that although this will help attract young people to contact and participate in lifesaving, the shortage of manpower in the industry is not affected by the entry conditions, because at present, you only need to hold a "swimming pool lifesaving badge" to be on duty in private housing estates. In addition, those who meet the Primary 6 level and other conditions, including holding a valid "Beach Lifesaving Badge" and a valid first aid certificate, can also apply for the government lifeguard examination.
The union continued to point out that the lack of promotion opportunities and prospects in the lifeguard grade is the main reason for the shortage of manpower, and the lifeguards of the LCSD, which are industry indicators, are still in the mechanic grade, which is not attractive enough. It will only be in the form of passers-by..." The union also mentioned that rescue operations are most about experience and teamwork.
The shortage of lifeguards has been a problem for a long time, and the LCSD and private swimming pools have different standards for hiring lifeguards. In the past, the trade union has repeatedly asked the LCSD to face up to the situation.
