The gardening and sowing of the plants can also be aligned in the month of August according to the lunar calendar.

The big harvest season will soon begin for the hobby gardener.

  • Of the

The lunar calendar specifies the best days for gardening of all kinds.

  • In August, summer slowly turns into autumn and the first vegetables can be harvested.

  • After gardening you can relax with homemade potpourri and ointments.

Hundreds of years ago, people found out that the moon influences many things on earth.

This includes not only ebb and flow, but also processes in nature and even in the human body.

Those who live according to the lunar calendar pay attention, for example, to the appropriate zodiac sign in which the moon is currently located, in order to plan appointments with the hairdresser, do the house cleaning or take care of other health issues.

Various phases in the lunar cycle, such as the waxing and waning of the moon and the sign of the zodiac in which it stands, play a role.

Even in the Middle Ages, the work of the farmers in the fields was based on the moon and modern gardening is hardly different in principle.

Each month has its own peculiarities, as explored by Maria Thun (1922-2012), the pioneer of biodynamic gardening, using astronomical calculations.

You should pay attention to the following special features when you take care of your garden in August.

Harvest time: The hobby gardener can harvest and pick in August

August belongs to late summer in the phenological calendar and turns into early autumn at the end of the month.

Now the heather is blooming, the first apples can be picked from the tree and most of the vegetables are nearing their harvest.

This is a busy time for garden owners.

Lettuce, kohlrabi, onions, carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes and herbs are about to be harvested and will keep the hobby gardener busy for the next few weeks.

Beans should also be picked every few days at this time of year so that new flowers can develop.

It is also advisable to regularly loosen the soil.

The same applies to onions, which are now being harvested.

Loosen the soil and cut through most of the onion's roots so they can't absorb any more water.

When the onions are ripe, they turn yellow and can be harvested.

Place the bulbs in the sun for a few days before storing, but protect them from rain and cool temperatures at night.

This way they stay fresh longer when stored.

Harvest time has also come for cucumbers and courgettes.

It's best to get started as soon as possible because the sooner these plants are harvested, the greater the harvest.

If the fruit hangs on the plants for too long, the plants will no longer have the energy for new flowers after the harvest.

Young cucumbers and courgettes that are harvested early also taste finer and more tender.

When harvesting, you should use a knife and not tear at the plants, which will only strain them unnecessarily.

Good care is now important: tomatoes and lettuce need your attention in late summer

Tomatoes and salads are also a topic in late summer.

Fully hanging tomato plants must be watered daily and need at least six liters of water.

Regular fertilization at intervals of about two weeks is also advisable.

You can use nettle or comfrey manure or organic liquid fertilizer for this.

You should also keep an eye on the plants and remove diseased or dead plant parts immediately so that the tomato does not develop brown rot and you can put the energy into the ripening of the healthy tomatoes.

If you want to grow lamb's lettuce, but there is currently no bed available, you can also grow the plants in pots.

The buckets should then be kept in a cool, shady place, such as in the basement or garage, especially on hot late summer days.

Bladderwort can also be preferred, especially if you have snails in your garden.

They are only too happy to eat the Barbarakraut seedlings, also known as winter cress.

Homemade herbal balm or potpourri for relaxation?

That's how it's done!

When the hobby gardener is done with all the hard gardening work, he can treat himself to something.

How about a homemade marigold balm for stressed skin on your hands and arms?

Simply harvest a handful of flower heads (about 30 grams) from your marigolds in the garden.

Then carefully heat 150 grams of lanolin from the pharmacy in a saucepan until it has melted.

Add the picked flowers and simmer over low heat for 15 minutes.

However, the flowers must not burn.

Strain the balm into a clean container that can be closed tightly.

You can also get jars of ointment from the pharmacy.

Of course you can also make a balm with another plant, for example rose petals or lavender.

Or you can use the herbs from your garden for a potpourri.

For example, the scent of a blend of lemon, mint, lemon balm, lavender and rosemary is good for relaxing and falling asleep.

For a potpourri you mix dried herbs and leave them in a tin can in the dark.

Then the mixture comes in an open bowl in the room.
