Opinion Clearing the conscience at our expense: on the cynical use of the USA in the Abu Aqla case | Israel Today

Israel's search for responsibility is rooted - it seems - in deep reasons. In Jewish liberal circles in particular, the tendency to self-blame is widespread even when there is no reason for it •

Aviva Hoxon-Barman was a talented journalist when she was murdered in her home at the age of 24. She worked for the public radio network NPR, and in her short career she managed to uncover abuses in a nursing home - a revelation that led to the prosecution of those involved in the crime.

On April 23, 2021, a bullet penetrated the window pane of Aviva's apartment in Kansas City.

He hit her in the head and killed her on the spot.

The local police determined that it was an accidental shooting, one that thousands are killed every year across the US. In Kansas City alone, only about half of dozens of deaths caused in this way are resolved.

A month after Aviva's death there was a development.

Her neighbor testified to the police that the murderous bullet was intended for her.

"My ex-boyfriend tried to kill me and I testified about it to the police. I'm sure he thought it was me," she told the New York Post newspaper.

According to this testimony - the talented journalist was not killed by a stray bullet, but by mistaken identification.

Nevertheless, the Kansas State Police, as of today, stands by its original conclusion.

To this day - a year and a half after her death - no one has been prosecuted for killing her, intentionally or accidentally.

Abu Aqla,

Although Aviva was murdered during the Biden administration, it goes without saying that no one in the government raises questions about the circumstances of her death.

Suspicion on the authorities in the USA that they are doing everything to find out the truth. Israel should not be preaching a moral to the Americans for not solving the incident of the killing of a young Jewish woman.

However, the trust and credit that the Israeli government gives to the American authorities is not reciprocated in the same currency.

At the end of last week, American Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and his deputy Wendy Sherman again brought up to their Israeli colleagues the case of the journalist Shireen Abu Aqla from "Al Jazeera" - a network with a record of twisting the truth.

Blinken and Sherman know very well that Israel did everything to find out who killed Abu Aqla.

Not only did she investigate herself, but she invited a representative of the American government, whose conclusion was that "it is not possible to determine who killed Shirin Abu Aqla."

Despite this, Blinken decided to meet last week with Abu Aqla's family members, who are doing a media tour here that is not very successful.

After the meeting in Lincoln, he spoke with Gantz and told him that "responsibility must be accepted" regarding Abu Aqla.

Wendy Sherman used the same words in her meeting with Internal Security Minister Amr Bar-Lev, in Washington last week.

The two not only bothered to bring up the subject of the closed case at the meeting, but also to report it to the public.

The search for Israel's responsibility, even when it is not found, is rooted - it seems - in deeper reasons.

In liberal circles in general, and Jewish ones in particular, the tendency to self-blame is widespread even when there is no reason for it.

There were nests of terrorism in Jenin.

Abu Aqla sided with the terrorists to cover their confrontation with the IDF. It is not known from what fire she was killed, but Sherman and Blinken don't need the facts. The remorse is enough.

When Blinken and Sherman, the Jews of course, demand that Israel admit to something it did not do - they are trying to clear their feelings of guilt at our expense, and it's a shame.

Because one of the most difficult challenges that Israel faces here in the US is delegitimization, especially from socialist circles in the Democratic Party. Lincoln and Sherman are not asked to whitewash the truth. But they are expected, specifically as Jews, not to take part in a blood plot against a country they claim to love In any case, they should take care of what's going on in their backyard first.
