Opinion Violence as a way of life - that's not how you fight crime Israel today

The violence in Arab society is not unusual in relation to Arab societies in the space around us • Advancement and modernity are only expressed in external aspects or the use of advanced technologies, but not in essence

Someone in the Israel Police must have speeded up the road.

In recent weeks, we have been repeatedly informed about the success of the police in eradicating crime in the Arab sector, reducing the trade in firearms and even significantly reducing, up to 30%, the murders in the Arab communities.

But the ink is not yet dry on the police announcements, and we have already been informed in the last week of another series of new murders - in the Druze settlement of Usafia, in Deir al-Assad, as well as in Lod - where Rabab Abu Siam, a 30-year-old teacher, identified by the police, was shot to death in front of her daughters as being "at the highest level of threat" due to her ex-husband's threats against her life.

Rabab is the seventh person to be murdered in the Arab sector since the beginning of the year, apparently because of what we call "family honor", and in total 63 Arab citizens were murdered in the last half of the year.

The leaders of the Arab public were quick to place the responsibility for these murders on the shoulders of the police, as well as the other state institutions, claiming that they are not doing enough to provide security for the Arab population and are not fighting resolutely against the criminal organizations in Arab society, which they claim are responsible for a large part of the acts of violence and murder.

But in the condemnations of the murders - mostly casual condemnations, as if someone who landed from the moon had committed them, as well as in the accusations leveled at the police - the lack of a call for self-reflection and self-correction within Arab society, from which the murderers come, often win from their surroundings the backing and at the very least the tacit approval of their actions, stands out. .

It is easy, convenient and popular to accuse the Israeli establishment of being responsible for the violence, and even to concoct conspiracy theories according to which the police and the Shin Bet have conspired with the crime families and in this framework they are allowed to operate unhindered in the Arab communities, provided they do not go against the state and its institutions.

But crime families were not behind the murder of the seven Arab women, as well as the dozens of those who were murdered before them.

It was their relatives who murdered the women for reasons of protecting the "honor of the family", and they usually had the support of their family members and the clans from which they sacrificed, and certainly no one denounced them or turned them into lepers.

Many good people, for example the Minister of Internal Security, claim that the reason for the violence in the Arab sector is the economic distress from which the Arab citizens suffer, and that investing in infrastructure and education and creating jobs will prevent crime.

At the same time, the claim is also heard that the continuation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict also encourages trends of extremism and violence.

But the truth is that the violence in Arab society is not unusual compared to Arab societies in the area around us, where also acts of murder for the honor of the family or as part of a conflict between clans are a common and widespread phenomenon.

Arab societies are still traditional, certainly in the rural areas, and the family and the clan are the basis of the identity and belonging of the individual and the nuclear family.

Loyalty is to the family above all, and society and the state are artificial frameworks that often draw their strength from the tribe, the family or the clan.

The conduct continues according to the codes and values of the past, while the introduction and modernity are only expressed in external aspects such as clothing (in some cases), or in the use of advanced technologies, but not in essence - not in loyalty and identity and not in the world of values and the code of conduct of what is permitted and what is prohibited.

Thus, a casual quarrel between two people can easily degenerate into a fight between clans, and old accounts from years ago can lead to a sudden and bloody outbreak of violence.

It is easier for the Arab politicians to attack the police than to point an accusing finger at what is going on inside the Arab society.

And in general, a change in the situation cannot happen overnight, but renouncing the path of violence and those behind it is the first step.

Increasing the governance of the state and mastering the values of respecting its laws are another necessary step, and this, as we know, is at the doorstep of the state and its institutions.
