"This is a deliberate Russian war crime, a deliberate mass murder of Ukrainian prisoners of war
," President Volodymyr Zelensky said.
On Friday July 29, explosions devastated a penal colony where Ukrainian prisoners were held in Olenivka, in an area controlled by Moscow in the Donbass, 15 km from the front line.
According to the Russian occupation authorities, the bombardment left 53 dead and 75 injured, including members of the Azov battalion.
These soldiers had surrendered in May after a siege of several weeks in Mariupol, where they held the stronghold of the Azovstal steelworks.
When they
"leaved the factory, the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) were committed to protecting our soldiers"
, the Ukrainian head of state was indignant.
The ICRC has asked to inspect the site, but the Kremlin is unlikely to respond favorably to this request.
